The role of social grants in supporting local economic development (LED)-Policy Brief January 2012

In a country such as South Africa where inequality levels are high combined with low levels of labour market participation, social grants have played an important role in supporting households to attain some minimum standard of living. Grants have also assisted in achieving human developmental goals including improved education and health outcomes 1while also reducing poverty levels in South Africa.
