The Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute strongly condemns the xenophobic attacks and incitement of violence against immigrants and foreign nationals in South Africa, which are currently unraveling.
Africa continues to suffer from the consequences of the 1884 Berlin Conference which created the colonial borders that still lead to division and displacement of African people on their own continent. The persistence of poverty, inequality and conflict in many African states has deepened the frustrations of the African people but we MUST NOT be misguided into inciting and taking part in acts of violence against each other.
