THE country’s biggest trade union federations have warned against a looming jobs cull in major sectors, including the mining industry.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is calling for a high-level jobs summit and has approached its alliance partner, the African National Congress (ANC), about the issue.

Although ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa could not confirm whether the party had been approached by Cosatu, he said: “(The) ANC has called (on) mining companies to review their position on job cuts as (this) will worsen the situation and add to unemployment.
