About R515-million of the agency’s R1.4-billion budget will be spent on road rehabilitation and reconstruction. “We are looking at a long- term way of dealing with deteriorating road infrastructure. “By resurfacing roads and reconstructing them we see fewer potholes,” said JRA spokesman Bertha Scheepers. She said the JRA had introduced a structured approach to road management that prioritises the preservation of infrastructure, ensuring it is maintained in good condition, and preventing further deterioration. Some major routes scheduled for a facelift are Mpumelelo Street and Wimbledon Road in Bertrams, Columbine Avenue and Bezuidenhout Street, Capricorn Drive and Bryntirrold Drive, and JB Marks Street and Riverside Road. In the 2014/2015 financial year, the agency spent R443- million of its R1.2-billion budget on road rehabilitation. An inspection of 814 bridges in the city also identified structural defects that needed urgent attention and R157- million is to be used to rehabilitate them.
