A hit by anti-corruption marches as Wits faces fees war

THOUSANDS of demonstrators converged on the Chamber of Mines in downtown Johannesburg on Wednesday, demanding action against corruption, while a student protest over fee increases at the University of Witwatersrand escalated into confrontation at the gates of the institution.

The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) estimated 50,000 members and supporters downed tools nationally and about 5,000 people marched on the Chamber of Mines and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange — the so-called “symbols of SA capital”.
