SOCIAL PROTECTION IN SOUTHERN AFRICA: A reflection on the opportunities provided by transformative social protection policies.

As we reflect on International Poverty Day (17 October), it is important to look at the social protection work that has been undertaken so far. For HelpAge and its network members, this includes examining its advocacy for universal old age pensions in recognition of the fact that 43% of the population in sub-Saharan Africa live in poverty – a large proportion of whom are older women and men above the age of 60 years. According to the World Bank, 7 of the 10 most unequal countries in the world are in southern Africa.
