Research and Advocacy

As an independent think tank, SPII focuses on generating new knowledge, information and analysis in the field of poverty and inequality studies. Our research and advocacy work has covered areas as diverse as universal basic income to the progressive realisation of socio-economic rights and engagement with the public budgeting system. See below for a list of our current projects.

Research and Advocacy

Building up knowledge to break down poverty

The Decent Standard of Living Project

The aim of this ongoing project is to derive an understanding of what constitutes a broadly acceptable standard of living that should be used to reflect a basic living level. Central to this ambitious target is an awareness of the necessity of moving away from the minimalist ‘poverty lines’ that have been used in the design and evaluation of anti-poverty programmes.

Budgeting for Change

Budgeting for Change consists of several initiatives aimed at making budget information more accessible, user-friendly and empowering. These include regular budgeting workshops in Soweto, working with partners to develop a budget information portal, and supporting the work of the Budget Justice Coalition as a founding member. Budget literacy and public participation are instrumental tools in improving service delivery and access to basic services.

Basic Income Grant

We support the provision of unconditional, regular cash payments to all South Africans to meet their immediate needs and lift them out of poverty. Our work here includes the production of research reports, advocacy campaigns and several other initiatives.
