Recommendations from the Khayelitsha Commission of Inquiry

The Khayelitsha Commission of Inquiry into policing has made many important recommendation to the National Minister of police. These include agreed upon minimum standards for policing (i.e. reasonable response time after a call), the establishment of a monitoring team made up on senior police officers and civilian participation, an increase in the number and improved training for detectives, published crime statistics at police stations every month, improved recruitment and the filling of vacant permeant appointments filled, officers trained in domestic violence issues and increased monitoring and oversight by the department. These recommendations are timely and provide insight into the very practical steps that are needed to turn policing around.
